Twins at TU offers scholarships to those who serve their communities

A set of identical twins attending Towson University are helping people however they can, through tutoring, teaching and giving away supplies. They started a scholarship for people who serve their community and want to better their futures.

Malachi and Rasul Wright are both on full scholarships at Towson University. Their education is taken care of, and that has opened up a whole lot of opportunities. Now, they’re giving other people the same opportunity.

The brothers have braved the journey of life and college together.

“We come from a large family of nine, and so college was always on the forefront of our minds when thinking about where we wanted to attend school, namely the cost of college, right,” Rasul Wright said.

That cost is high, so the Wright brothers put college on hold and worked at BJ’s Wholesale Club after high school. Then they got a scholarship to Prince George’s Community College. Shortly after, Towson granted them both full scholarships.

“In order for us to get here, we received some help, and sometimes you got to receive help, so for those gaps, to fill in those gaps that we feel like we could have had some extra support in, we decided to make things like scholarships,” Malachi Wright said.

Both have a passion for giving back, whether through church or through Towson University. They are both tutors. They both are teaching at Dundalk Middle School this semester. They have given Thanksgiving meals to their hometown community and dental supplies to the local community.

That is why the twins started the Wright Brothers Endowment Scholarship for anyone working or attending school who has a passion for serving the community.

“The funds come directly from private donors, and they also come from our pockets as well,” Rasul Wright said.

“We want students and individuals in the community to have that opportunity to not have to worry or have it been that burdensome of getting those things that they may need,” Malachi Wright said.

In their first year, the twins gave away three $100 scholarships. They hope to give away more money in the future, but the brothers told 11 News their father inspired them to do what they can.

“He always would tell us to be great now, and so we never had an inkling to wait to do for the community,” Rasul Wright said. “We found it paramount that we start what it is that we plan to do, which was our scholarship.”

Things have not always gone as planned either. While serving and going to school, the twins have had to overcome adversity. Last semester Malachi had complications after a routine hernia surgery. He lost feeling in one of his legs and had to relearn how to stand, sit, and walk again, all while taking 16 credits and trying to keep up with his involvements. Despite it all, he still got a 4.0 GPA and will graduate on time with his brother.

The twins are set to graduate in December, and this will be the first time in their lives they’ll have separate graduation ceremonies.

Rasul Wright is a history major with a focus on secondary education. He is on the pre-law track. Malachi Wright is a biology major with a focus on secondary education on the pre-dental track.
