Carl Runk is as fascinating a storyteller as he is a coach.

Here’s one story: The preseason conditioning test for his players included “dips.” Coach Runk, a football player at Arizona State, would wait until everyone finished and would gather the highest score. He’d go out and do that number himself — plus one.
