KEZIAH JOHN: MAKING HER LAST SUMMER AS A HIGH SCHOOLER COUNT
This summer has been a whirlwind of activity for me, but it's been incredibly rewarding.
Usually, my summers are all about travel and adventure, but this year, I decided to dedicate my time to something closer to home. I've been volunteering at the University of Maryland, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, and let me tell you, it's been quite the experience.
One cool thing about this place is that I was actually born there, so in a way, it feels like I've come full circle. I'm set to intern there once school starts as part of a class I'm taking, but I thought, "Why not start early?" After all, this is my last summer vacation as a high schooler, and I want to make it count.

The volunteer process was quite the journey, from filling out tons of paperwork to getting a TB [tuberculosis] test. But it was all worth it when I received my brand-new badge and uniform. Now, I'm working on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday afternoons, and let me tell you, it's been an eye-opening experience.
The best part is that the hours are flexible, so I can adjust them to fit my schedule. It's been amazing to be a part of something meaningful and impactful. I am looking into majoring in biology once I go into college and potentially working in a medical setting.
“I feel wonderful about these volunteers giving up their time to help others. Hopefully I can always try to make it a meaningful experience for them!”–Cheryl Slaski, head volunteer coordinator and Keziah's supervisor
I had to share this incredible experience I had while volunteering at St. Joe's. The other day, something amazing happened that made me see the field of healthcare in a whole new light. I was sitting at my desk when a visitor to the hospital approached me and asked for help finding some food. Without hesitation, I took her under my wing and led her to the cafeteria, where she found a Subway and took me with her. After all that, this sweet lady tried to treat me to a sandwich, cookies, and drinks as a token of gratitude. Of course, I had to politely decline, but her kind words and genuine appreciation meant the world to me.
It's moments like these that remind me why I love volunteering. The chance to meet incredible people and make a real difference in their day is what keeps me coming back for more. In addition to helping visitors, I also answer phone calls at the desk, restock isolation gowns in cubbies, give patients ice water if they ask for it, answer page calls, and do light paperwork such as organizing schedules.
I just can't contain my excitement about what's in store for me at St. Joe's! Volunteering there has been such a heartwarming and incredible experience.
MY OTHER PASSION – WRITING!
When I'm not at St. Joe's, you can find me indulging in my other passion – writing! I've been pouring my heart into my third book lately over the summer. Writing is my true love, and I've been lucky enough to have two books published before. My desk chair has practically become my second home as I pour out my thoughts and ideas onto the page.
I wrote a book called “New Girl New World” when I was 11, and my most recent book, called “Finding Home,” when I was 14. I want to finish my third book, “The Ivy League Effect,” before I graduate high school.
