Job Fair Hiring Laid-Off Federal Workers In Baltimore County

Laid-off federal workers are invited to a Baltimore County job fair. The county government is hiring in 15 departments.

TOWSON, MD — The Baltimore County Government will host its first-ever pop-up career fair on Thursday.

Jobseekers of all experience levels and backgrounds are invited, but laid-off federal workers are especially encouraged to attend as 15 county government departments will be on site.

"With competitive salaries, best-in-class benefits, and an ongoing commitment to public service, Baltimore County offers opportunities for those with a variety of experience and skill sets to thrive in their careers," Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier (D) said in a press release. "We invite anyone interested — in particular those affected by recent layoffs in federal and non-profit workforces — to join us and see how their skills can make our communities safer, stronger, and healthier for years to come."

The county also compiled a list of resources for federal employees, civil servants, contractors or nonprofit employees affected by the mass layoffs and government downsizing. The resources are available at bit.ly/baltcoworkforcehelp.

Thousands of jobs have been cut under President Donald Trump's push to downsize the government. Trump tapped Elon Musk, the world's richest person, to identify wasteful spending via the Department of Government Efficiency.

That has sparked layoffs at agencies like the Department of Agriculture and the Federal Aviation Administration. Other job cuts have hit the Department of Education, the National Parks Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among other organizations.

Gov. Wes Moore (D) fears that 10,000 probationary employees from Maryland could lose their jobs. Probationary employees — new hires and those who recently changed positions — are among the most common layoffs.

The career fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at StarTUp at the Armory, located at 307 Washington Ave. at Towson University. Free parking validations will be available for the Baltimore County Revenue Authority's Baltimore Avenue or Washington Avenue garages.

The Baltimore County Department of Economic and Workforce Development will provide personalized career counseling and job search advice. It will also review resumes and have computers available to apply for jobs.

Library staff will issue library cards and share information about borrowable Chromebooks and hotspots; free access to job-development tools such as LinkedIn Learning, Cisco Networking Academy; and Brainfuse for resume and cover letter assistance.

A library social worker will also be available to schedule virtual meetings for anybody seeking unemployment benefits.
