Towson spends $870K on Women’s and Gender Studies department with just 11 majors

The university's Women’s and Gender Studies department received $870,220 in funding during the 2024–2025 academic year.

Twenty-seven students were enrolled in fall 2021, while just 14 were enrolled in 2025.

Twenty-seven students were enrolled on Nov. 1, 2021, while just 14 were enrolled on that same date in 2025. These numbers mean the program suffered a 48 percent drop in undergraduate and graduate enrollment, according to the university’s Office of Institutional Research.

Towson University spent more than $870,000 on its women and gender studies program last year. The program encompasses only 11 individual undergraduate students.

Towson’s undergraduate enrollment in fall 2025 was 16,361 students, which means that just 0.07 percent of the undergraduate student body was enrolled in the program that semester.

The department also offers a master’s program, which only awarded two degrees during the 2024-2025 academic year, and a certificate program, which had no graduates.
