Under the newly passed legislation, annual salaries for regular county council members will jump nearly 74%, increasing from $69,000 to $119,750 starting in the next term. The council chairman’s annual salary will rise from $77,000 to $129,750. In a separate measure, council members also approved a 25% pay raise for the county executive, bumping the position’s salary from $192,000 to $240,000 annually.
The measures will take effect in December following the upcoming election, coinciding with the council’s expansion from seven seats to nine.
Breakdown of the Vote
The 5-2 vote fell largely along party lines, with all five Democratic council members voting in favor and two Republican council members opposing the measures.

In favor (5):
Opposed (2):
Proponents of the legislation argued that compensation for council members had not kept pace with the growing demands of the job or standard regional salaries. Supporters emphasized that treating the council as a full-time professional commitment would attract a wider, more diverse array of candidates.
Opponents and public critics questioned the timing and magnitude of the $50,000 salary bump for council members, raising concerns about taxpayer impact and fiscal responsibility.
