Firefighters For

The Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company in Owings Mills hosted its first-ever Firefighter for a Day event, giving community members an insider look at what it takes to be a first responder.

The day started with a quick lesson in gear prep—where participants discovered that turnout gear, air tanks, and tools can add over 100 extra pounds! To get moving, everyone competed in a lighthearted timed challenge to see who could suit up the fastest.

From there, the groups rotated through four stations designed to provide a hands-on introduction to essential firefighter skills. Participants got a practical feel for the work by climbing a ladder to a second-story window, practicing a safe window exit, and handling a pressurized hose to put out a target fire.

They even got to experience search-and-rescue basics, covering their eyes to navigate a dark room and find a dummy victim. Teams even had some fun playing Jenga with hydraulic rescue tools and playing tug-o-war with rescue ropes.

Now that they have a taste of being a first responder, several participants are planning to take the next step toward applying as volunteer members and starting formal training. If you want to become a firefighter with Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company, learn more at https://www.chestnutridgefire.com/membership and fill out the interest form.
