Grandpa’s Holiday Train Garden Page for 2023

By: Jeff SchmaltzThe Washington, Virginia & Maryland Garden Railway Society

Grandpa and Grandma have come off the road and settled down in south-central Pennsylvania. His grandsons are no longer train-crazy but he is still enamored with the Baltimore tradition of Christmas Train Gardens and continues to update this list of holiday train displays. The list is meant to be inclusive, in addition to the traditional Baltimore firehouse holiday train garden, any train display, open house, etc., whether holiday themed or not, is included, with a rather broad geographic coverage as well.

HELP RECEIVED: As a first step, WVMGRS club member Tom Roehl created this Google Map from the list. For more details, see the Comment section below.

Here are links to some articles on the history of train gardens:

Tracking Down a Seasonal Baltimore Phenomenon (Baltimore City Paper 2000)

Holiday Train Garden Traditions (Fire Museum of Maryland)

Here’s a new one: Electrifying and Animating Maryland’s Christmas Gardens (Maryland Center for History and Culture)

And you might enjoy, as I did, Paul Race’s musings on “What Do Trains Have To Do With Christmas?”

We strive to maintain a comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date list of train gardens, displays, and open houses in the greater Baltimore-Washington DC area. Please help us by sending any corrections, additions, deletions, broken links, etc. to traingarden@wvmgrs.org (Last updated: 28 November 2023)
