Sparrows Point, Dulaney students win top athletic scholarships

The Mildred Murray All-Academic Scholar-Athlete Award and Scholarship has been awarded to two senior student-athletes at Baltimore County Public Schools for their academic and athletic achievements.

Olivia Gardner of Sparrows Point High School and Roman Kaminski of Dulaney High School were both named winners of the 37th annual awards, which are presented by the BCPS Office of Athletics. The $10,000 scholarships are part of the school district’s efforts to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of students who have displayed a commitment to excellence in both athletics and academics.

“Throughout high school, Olivia and Roman have excelled in the classroom and on the playing field,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers. “It is an honor to celebrate their achievements and by extension to celebrate all the BCPS students who are enriched by participating in athletics. By honoring student-athletes, we shed light on the many ways that athletic activities bring us together and teach us important life skills like perseverance, communication, strategy, physical fitness, and teamwork.”

Gardner is a graduate of Sparrows Point High School, where she has maintained a 3.96 unweighted grade point average. She plans to attend Shepherd University in the fall, where she will specialize in exercise science. Kaminski is a graduate of Dulaney High School, where he has maintained a 3.95 unweighted grade point average. He plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall, where he will major in biology and play club lacrosse.

The Allied Sports program at BCPS provides students with disabilities with an equal opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports alongside their peers without disabilities. The program offers scholarships to those who are nominated by their coaches or athletic director.
