Art in the Round Showcases Artists with Developmental Disabilities

The Arc Baltimore’s Largest Annual Fund-Raising Event Will Be Held October 25

The Arc Baltimore will hold its largest and most anticipated annual fund-raising event – Art in the Round – on Friday, October 25, 6:30 -10 p.m., at the Grand Lodge of Maryland (304 International Circle, Hunt Valley, MD).

Showcasing the talent and artistry of people with developmental disabilities, Art in the Round will feature an eclectic exhibit of 60 jury-selected paintings, drawings, watercolors, sculptures, and ceramics, all of which attendees can bid on as part of the fund-raising auction.

“Art in the Round is The Arc Baltimore’s biggest fund-raising event, with proceeds helping to support art classes, workshops, and other mission-related programs for people with developmental disabilities,” says Kathleen McNally Durkin, the organization’s Chief Executive Officer.

Beyond the art exhibition, attendees at Art in the Round will be able to enjoy mobile bidding, hors d’oeuvres, an open bar featuring a specialty drink, and lots of opportunities to meet with the artists and discuss the inspiration behind their artwork.

They can also purchase a raffle ticket to win a Tuscan Wine Experience for two couples for three nights, valued at $5,000. Each ticket comes with a bottle of wine hand-selected by Art in the Round’s Wine Wall Sponsor, Total Wine & More. Only 100 tickets are available and can be purchased in advance or at the event.

Art in the Round artists receive 60 percent of the winning bid for each piece of art sold during the event auction. In addition, The Arc Baltimore presents a financial award to the artist whose work is chosen to be used for next year’s Art in the Round promotional poster.

More than 400 people are expected to attend this year’s Art in the Round. Tickets are $100 per person and $900 for a reserved table of 10. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.thearcbaltimore.org/art-in-the-round/. For more information, contact Lauren Seabolt at 410-296-2272, ext. 5220, or lseabolt@thearcbaltimore.org.

      History

Learn more about The Arc Baltimore’s 70+ years of history.

In 1949, a group of eight parents founded the “Maryland Society for Mentally Retarded Children, Inc.”, and began laying the groundwork for the direct service programs that would become our hallmark. Over the next 25 years, we were a consistent pioneer in programming through the establishment of a developmental program for young children who weren’t guaranteed education at the time, several recreational programs, a sheltered workshop, the state’s first activity center for adults, the state’s first group home in Roland Park, a landscape employment services division and countless other programs.

The next 30 years saw the creation of a respite care program, janitorial employment services, a treatment foster care program, and the expansion of our groundbreaking community living program to accommodate deinstitutionalized individuals. In addition, there was a reduction of employment and day centers from twelve to 6 to encourage greater community involvement, and the creation of a number of family services including support groups, a family training curriculum, and our Bay Buddies summer enrichment and education program.

In 2008, we launched the innovative Project SEARCH high school and adult employment internship program at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and have since added two program sites. In 2013, we created our Career Catalyst program that focuses on helping employees with developmental disabilities who are currently underemployed or unemployed find meaningful employment.

As one of the nation’s largest and most respected organizations of its kind, The Arc Baltimore is an indispensable resource providing employment training and support, day and residential services, family support and education, treatment foster care, respite care, public policy advocacy, and information and referrals.
