This fall, two longstanding Maryland organizations have teamed up to combat food insecurity for residents statewide.

McCormick & Company, the spice company founded in Baltimore in 1889, recently celebrated its 135th anniversary by letting employees around the world volunteer for 135 days from June to late October to help their communities.

Maryland-based McCormick employees could volunteer at the Maryland Food Bank headquarters in Baltimore.

Food insecurity remains an urgent issue in Maryland, with one in three Marylanders facing hunger, and 40% of families reporting their children sometimes or often did not have enough to eat, the food bank said in a news release.

On Oct. 3, more than 70 volunteers from McCormick & Company packed meal boxes, harvested vegetables and herbs from MFB’s onsite garden, and prepared meals for MFB’s Supper Club, which serves children in afterschool programs. Volunteers packed 2,000 boxes of healthy, nutritious food in 90 minutes. This fall, those meal boxes will be distributed to families facing hunger across the state.

“At the Maryland Food Bank, our mission is to end hunger, and we cannot do it alone. That’s why we are so grateful to partners like McCormick & Company for showing up for hungry neighbors now and over the past 30 years,” said Carmen Del Guercio, president and CEO of the Maryland Food Bank, in a statement.

Since 1992, McCormick & Company has donated $1.2 million to the Maryland Food Bank to deliver nutritious food to individuals and families in need, and initiatives that address the root causes of hunger.

"As we celebrate McCormick’s 135th anniversary, our partnership with the Maryland Food Bank is a testament to our shared commitment to fighting food insecurity locally,” said Lori Robinson, chief communications officer for McCormick & Company, in a news release. “For over 30 years, we’ve supported this essential organization, providing not just meals, but hope to families across Maryland. This year, we’re continuing our proud legacy of doing what’s right for the communities where we live, work, and operate and it’s an honor to see the impact of our collective efforts firsthand."
