Pawpaw growers enjoy ‘renaissance’

HAMPSTEAD, Md. — Elisa Lane expected to start a cut flower operation in northern Carroll County when she eagerly upgraded from a community farm plot in downtown Baltimore in 2012, but the pawpaws were a pleasant surprise.

When Lane and her family purchased a 15-acre farm on rolling, wooded hills about 7 miles south of the Pennsylvania border, its previous owner informed her about a small grove of pawpaw trees a short walk across the property.
