Our featured quilters, Kathy Awalt and Natalie Blum, present a retrospective view of the quilts they have made over the years.
Above: A selection of quilts by Natalie Blum.
Natalie has loved art her entire life and spent most of her career as elementary school art teacher in Baltimore City. She made her first quilt for her son when he was six months old and was soon making many, many more baby quilts!
Her love for quilting grew as she began taking classes and workshops to learn new techniques. She is now well-known for her art quilts where she features improvisation and photographs to create striking works of art.
Above: A selection of quilts by Kathy Awalt.
Kathy began sewing as part of 4-H under the tutelage of her grandmother, Grace, using a Singer Featherweight. Her interest in quilting came a little later when she was in grad school and the art of quilting was seeing a resurgence. But Kathy’s creative endeavors were put on hold while she finished medical school and her residency in pediatrics.
Then, inspiration struck when she read about the improvisational work of Freddie Moran and Gwen Marston. Kathy was so taken by their approaches that she traveled to Asilomar in Pacific Grove, CA, to create a quilt under their guidance. While Kathy has learned many techniques from many gifted artists, Gwen became her life-long friend and mentor. You will see Gwen and Freddie’s influence in Kathy’s quilts.
We are raffling a fabulous Bernina Kaffe 475 (underwritten by Domesticity). This machine is a workhorse, yet small enough to take to retreats. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10 and can be purchased online (see Advance Purchase link above) or at the Expo. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted at the Expo.
“Baltimore Charm” represents the combined efforts of many members of the Baltimore Heritage Quilt Guild. This lovely 66″ x 66″ quilt, fashioned using colors of the sea and sunrise, showcases an array of quilting techniques including applique, piecing, and foundations piecing. It includes motifs that represent the State of Maryland: Orioles, Ravens, Checkerspot butterflies, and Black-Eyed Susans, each symbolizing a unique aspect of Maryland’s rich heritage.
Tickets for Raffle Baskets are only available at the show. There will be more than 20 themed baskets, including Jams and Jellyrolls; Orioles; Spice It Up (featuring spices from McCormick); and of course, Wine!
Tickets will be $20 for 25 tickets, $10 for 10 tickets, $5 for 5 tickets, $1 for 1 ticket, and are only available at the Expo. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted at the Expo.
These free demos will introduce you to a variety of quilting and fiber art techniques.
