Towson Basketball Helps Donate Meals Via ‘Great Community Initiative’

Towson basketball scored an assist, helping donate meals through this "great community initiative."

The Towson University men's basketball team scored a major community assist while marching toward its conference regular season title.

With every free throw made this year, the Tigers helped donate 100 meals to local food banks. The partnership came via Food Lion and Feeding America.

Food Lion announced last week that Towson maxed out its contribution, sinking over 300 free throws and providing 30,000 meals through the Score to Give More initiative. The squad made 384 free throws last year en route to a 22-11 record, including a league-best 16-2 record within the Coastal Athletic Association.

The Tigers football team also participates and donates for every sack up to 30 sacks. With 33 sacks last season, the team contributed another 30,000 meals.

Towson promotes the program through social media and in-game announcements.

"We are proud to be partners with Food Lion for the Score to Give More and Sack to Give Back programs," Towson Assistant Athletic Director Dave Vatz said. "The Food Lion Feeds program is a great community initiative, helping those in need. Our men's basketball and football teams are honored to be part of this partnership that helps so many in the community."

Food Lion Feeds, founded in 2014, partnered this year with 51 college basketball programs, including 15 women's teams, in its Score to Give More push. The effort resulted in more than 1.6 million meals provided to neighbors experiencing hunger.

Since the program debuted in 2019, it has helped provide more than 6.5 million meals to each school's campus food pantry or affiliated Feeding America partner food bank where each college is located.

"The Score to Give More Program is about raising awareness about food insecurity in our communities and engaging college students in the fight against hunger," Food Lion Feeds Manager Kevin Durkee said. "It also strengthens our college partnerships and supports our students and student-athletes. We are incredibly proud to collaborate with so many colleges dedicated to making a real difference."

Food Lion Feeds has helped to provide more than 1.5 billion meals to individuals and families since its inception and has committed to donating 3 billion meals by 2032.

$1 helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local partner food banks.
