Landeta Placed on 2026 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot

IRVING, Texas – Towson University football alum Sean Landeta is on the 2026 National Football Foundation (NFF) College Football Hall of Fame ballot, selected as a divisional player candidate.

Landeta is one of 79 players, along with nine coaches, in the divisional player candidate pool of the ballot, encompassing players in the FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA eras. Four of the 88 will be voted into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 ballot.

Landeta has been a nominee on the ballot each year since 2019.

"For more than 65 years, the NFF College Football Hall of Fame has stood as the sport's ultimate archive, honoring those whose impact on the game still echoes today," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell in the NFF press release. "This year's ballot carries forward that responsibility, spotlighting individuals who not only excelled on the field but also helped define what college football means to so many."

Landeta, a Towson Athletics Hall of Fame member, was one of the top special teams players in college football. He is a member of several Halls of Fame, including Division II College Football Hall of Fame, the State of Maryland Sports Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Playing for the Tigers from 1979-82, Landeta currently holds the Towson records with 225 career punts, 9452 punting yards and a career average of 42 yards per punt, leading the nation in punting and placekicking in 1980. He also converted 26 career field goals and was 70-for-74 (94.6%) on extra point attempts.

In 1982, he was the first-ever punter to earn AP College Division All-America recognition, also being selected as an AFCA NCAA Division II Kodak All-American. Landeta also was a three-time First Team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honoree.

He went on to have a stellar professional career, winning two Super Bowls with the New York Giants and two USFL titles with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars. Landeta was a three-time First Team All-Pro, playing in 284 National Football League (NFL) games with 1,401 punts, averaging 43.3 yards per punt.

The 2026 NFF College Football Hall of Fame Class will be made early next year.
