Maryland Native and Son of Former Redskins GM Selected in NHL Draft

Vinny Cerrato led the Washington Redskins’ personnel department throughout the 2000s as their de facto general manager before parting ways with the team permanently in 2009. Charlie Cerrato, Vinny’s son, was just drafted in the second of the NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Charlie Cerrato, a 6’1, 195-pound Centerman, had an impressive rookie season, ranking in the top 10 nationally in faceoff wins by capturing 57.2 percent (388-for-678). The Fallston, MD native became the 18th Penn State Nittany Lion ever to hear his name called in the NHL Draft and is now the second-highest draft pick in program history– trailing only incoming freshman Jackson Smith, who was selected in the first round on Friday.

Cerrato established himself in Hockey Valley and was voted the 2024-25 Freshman of the Year by his peers after posting the second-best rookie campaign in program history. He finished the season with 42 points on 15 goals and 27 assists, leading all Big Ten freshmen in every offensive category. Nationally, his point and assist totals ranked second, while his goal tally ranked third among first-year players.

In addition to reaching the 40-point mark as only the second Nittany Lion rookie to do so, Cerrato tied for the fifth highest scoring season in PSU history. His 27 assists are the second-most by a freshman and tied for the third-most in a single season, while his 15 goals rank tied for the fifth-most by a PSU rookie.
