Late Comeback Keeps 13 Match Win Streak Alive for Towson Volleyball

    BOSTON – The Towson University volleyball team faced Northeastern in the second of two Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matches on Saturday afternoon at the Cabot Center in Boston.

    This match was the tale of two halves as the first three sets were decided by a combined six points in favor of Northeastern (5-8, 1-3 CAA). Over the final two sets, Towson (13-2, 4-0 CAA) won by respective scores of 25-19 and 15-12, marking a decision of nine points combined.

    Key Stats

    • Northeastern held a slight .230 to .207 hitting edge in the match. Despite that, the Tigers had a decisive .238 to .111 hitting advantage in the fifth set.
    • Sarah Callender (17), Maisie Jesse (34), and Sydney Stewart (21) led all players with their respective kill, assist and dig totals.
    • After the Tigers had no set with less than six attack errors through the first three frames, they limited their errors to four in each on the last two sets to win the match.

    How it Happened

    • The Huskies opened the first set with a 5-4 lead before Towson scored eight of the next nine points to claim a 12-6 lead.
    • The Tigers extended their lead to seven at 16-9 before the Huskies scored ten of the next eleven points, giving them a 19-17 lead.
    • The Black & Gold scored three of the next four points in the frame to knot things up at 20 apiece.
    • Northeastern closed the set with five unanswered points to win 25-20.
    • The Huskies started the second set with an early 6-3 lead before the Tigers scored nine of the next ten for a 12-7 lead.
    • A 4-2 Tiger run to follow pushed their lead to 16-9.
    • The Huskies went on to score 10 of the next 14 points to pull within a point at 20-19.
    • TU closed the second set on a 5-4 run to hold on for a 25-23 win, evening the score.
    • Set three was neck-and-neck to start, with Towson able to get out to a slight 8-7 lead through 15 points.
    • The Tigers followed that with four unanswered points to extend the lead to five at 12-7.
    • Northeastern followed that with a 5-1 run to pull within one at 13-12.
    • A 12-6 Husky run powered them to a 24-19 set point.
    • Towson scored three-straight points before an NU kill gave the Huskies a 2-1 set advantage.
    • The Black & gold began the first set with an early 5-3 lead before the Huskies strung together six of the next eight points for a 9-7 lead.
    • The Tigers pulled within a point at 13-12 before a run of six unanswered points delivered an 18-13 lead.
    • At 20-14, the teams traded side outs for the remainder of the set. That gave Towson a 25-19 win, the largest margin of victory in a set during the weekend.
    • Northeastern started the last set with a 5-1 lead before Towson had a 5-1 run of its own to tie the set at six apiece.
    • The Tigers followed that with a 6-3 run, building a 12-9 lead in the set.
    • Addie Leber and Erin Brothers each had a kill over the Tigers' final three points to win the fifth set 15-12.

    Inside the Numbers

    • Leber had career-high 15 kills on a .286 hitting percentage, the second highest kill total in the match. She also finished with 13 digs, marking her first-ever double-double.
    • Callender finished with 17 kills, her highest total in the last five matches.
    • Jesse finished with 34 assists, her highest total in a match this season. She totaled 65 in two matches vs. the Huskies.

    The Tigers return to SECU Arena next Saturday at 11 a.m. to open a two-match series against the UNCW Seahawks. The second match on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
