APG Federal CU Expands
A Harford County credit union plans to open a branch in Cockeysville amid a push to expand deeper into Baltimore County.
Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union will open a location at 10301 York Road early next year. The branch will be APGFCU’s third in Baltimore County, after the credit union acquired two branches there earlier this month when it took over Members First of Maryland Federal Credit Union, which had been liquidated by federal regulators. Becky Smith, APGFCU’s new CEO, said the acquisition helped speed up APGFCU’s efforts to add members in Baltimore County and that the credit union also wants to open a branch in Baltimore City.
“It's an exciting time for APGFCU; this merger for us and our Cockeysville location is just the beginning of our growth plans,” Smith said.
APGFCU first started allowing residents of Baltimore City and Baltimore County to become members in 2022, and since then, about 34% of the credit union's new members have come from those areas, she said. That's led the credit union to double its membership base in the county and city over the past three years. APGFCU has historically focused on Harford and Cecil counties, with anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or volunteers in those counties or has a family member who meets the criteria eligible for membership.
The credit union has 15 branches in Harford and Cecil counties and will now go from zero Baltimore County branches to three in less than a year. The Cockeysville branch is located just off Interstate 83 and was chosen because of its high traffic volume and proximity to many small businesses. Smith said APGFCU has the opportunity to add a lot of small businesses as clients, many of whom have been “lost in the mix” by larger national banks. The credit union wants to expand its product offerings to better serve those clients.
