Iconic Company ‘The Classic Catering People’ Has Transitioned Ownership To Current Executive

Catering Leader Committed to Preserving Legacy and Inspiring Growth

The Classic Catering People, a Maryland leader in hospitality, announced today that ownership of the company has been sold and transitioned to company Controller, Alex Mathov. Harriet Dopkin and Larry Frank will remain involved as advisors. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

For more than 40 years, The Classic Catering People has focused on being an integral part of the community, supported by the contributions of their talented team. This focus will remain with Mathov taking the reins.

Mathov, who will become Chief Financial Officer, said “Classic has been a cornerstone of hospitality in Baltimore, surrounding counties and beyond, built on relationships, care, and community. I am honored to carry that legacy forward while working alongside the incredible team who made it what it is today. Together, we will celebrate the past, strengthen the present, and build a future that continues to reflect the heart of this company and the people it serves.”

Alex, born in Argentina, has lived in Baltimore for over two decades. With a career focus on finance and entrepreneurship, he is drawn to companies built on integrity, relationships, and long-term impact, hence the natural connection to The Classic Catering People. Prior to joining Classic, Alex held various finance positions in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Alex’s wife, Rachel, is a Baltimore native. They met while attending Goucher College and she later earned her MBA from Loyola University Maryland. She was born and raised in Owings Mills and attended Krieger Schechter and Beth Tfiloh. They have a five-year-old son, Julian, who attends Gilman, and a one-year-old daughter Isabella.

While Alex will bring energy and growth to The Classic Catering People, he understands that he is trusted with a legacy and an exceptional team of people to continue to forge ahead, maintaining what made Classic “classic” while instilling his vision.

Harriet and Larry added, “Our connection with Alex and his family was immediate, and we are truly thrilled to be making this transition with him. Alex shares our values and understands that he is becoming part of a remarkable team of people who are deeply rooted in and committed to our community.”

This next chapter builds on the foundation created by the Dopkins (Ansela & Michael, Eddie, Harriet, Anna, David), Gail and Lenny Kaplan and Larry Frank, and was strengthened through the support of an extraordinary team of people, many of whom have been with the families for decades.
