HUNT VALLEY, Md. —A new app is creating a safe space for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build community and lasting relationships.
The "Hello, It's Me" app launched in July to keep people with disabilities from feeling lonely.
Kristi Carver, who was born with a cognitive disorder that comes with daily challenges and can make life feel lonely at times, said she has struggled to find friends and build new relationships.
"I've been trying to do it, trying to find friends to connect with," Carver said.
Dr. Karyn Harvey, a psychologist, said loneliness is common among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"I believe it's our biggest problem in the field of intellectual developmental disabilities," Harvey said. "Loneliness is a devastating problem. People are just too isolated, often dying, never having had a boyfriend or a girlfriend having wanted one, also not having friends."
