Goucher Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023
The Goucher College athletic department will induct the 2023 class of the Goucher Athletic Hall of Fame on October 20th. Men's lacrosse all-time leading scorer Rory Averett '12, equestrian national champion Anna Carmichael '16, women's lacrosse standout Lauren Manekin '02 and longtime Director of Athletics Geoff Miller will be honored. In addition, the 2013 equestrian team will be inducted as the third Team of Distinction in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of equestrian at Goucher.
Started in 2010, the Goucher Athletic Hall of Fame will now include a total of 46 members with the induction of this year's class.
The 2023 Goucher Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, October 20, 2023, as part of the College's annual Blue and Gold Weekend. More details on the ceremony will be announced in the future.
Averett, a native of Ivyland, Pennsylvania, is the all-time leading scorer in Goucher men's lacrosse history with 190 goals. He ranks second in career points with 236. A three-time Landmark All-Conference selection who earned First Team honors as a junior and senior, Averett was named a USILA honorable mention All-American as a senior after totaling 52 goals and 16 assists for 68 points. Over his four years, the Gophers posted a record of 53-17 and captured Landmark Conference championships in 2010 and 2012. | |
Carmichael, who came to Goucher from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was the IHSA national champion and Zone IV champion in Novice Fences as a sophomore in 2014 as she helped the Gophers to a sixth-place finish at nationals. As a junior Carmichael was the Reserve Zone Champion and placed fifth at nationals in Novice Flat, while as a senior she repeated as Reserve Zone Champion in Novice Flat to earn her third nationals trip. As a team Goucher qualified for nationals in each of her four seasons and captured four Zone IV, Region I championships. | |
Manekin, a Lutherville, Maryland native, was a four-year standout for the women's lacrosse program from 1999-2002. She ranks second in career goals with 220, while her 275 career points are good for fourth in program history. Manekin was a two-time IWLCA All-American, earning First Team honors as a sophomore and Second Team accolades as a junior. A three-time All-Region selection, Manekin was a three-time Capital Athletic Conference All-Conference honoree, earning First Team honors in 2001. | |
Miller served as Goucher's Director of Athletics from 1994 until the spring of 2018. Over his 24-year career, Gopher teams made 15 national tournament appearances and won numerous conference championships. Miller oversaw expansion of the athletic department to a department that currently sponsors 21 varsity sports and serves over 300 student-athletes. He was instrumental in overseeing the formation of the Landmark Conference with a total of eight Mid-Atlantic primarily liberal arts institutions for the 2007-08 academic year. Miller's support of the Goucher equestrian program was also instrumental as it became one of the top equestrian programs in the region and the nation. |
The 2013 equestrian team posted Goucher's highest-ever to date finish at IHSA nationals, finishing fifth overall. In addition to Carmichael's national championship, Karli Postel placed second in Open Fences and sixth in Open Flat at nationals. As an individual, Addie Jobin placed third in Intermediate Fences at nationals. The Zone IV, Region I champion, the Gophers placed second at the Zone championship to advance to nationals. The 2013 team was the final team coached by Hall of Fame coach Patte Zumbrun, who served as head of the Goucher equestrian program from 1987-2013.
