110-Year-Old Candy Shop Offers Homemade Delicacies Statewide

Wockenfuss Candies, which opened in 1915, has 7 locations across MD. They offer homemade chocolates and other candies.

A fifth-generation company with roots in Maryland offers homemade chocolates, truffles, gummies and more at seven locations across the state, including one in Towson and Bel Air.

Wockenfuss Candies is a family-owned and operated company created in 1915. It was started by Charles Wockenfuss, who arrived in America in 1887 from West Prussia, Germany, when he was just 10 years old. He opened the Wockenfuss Candy Company in 1915, which is known today as Wockenfuss Candies.

In 1945, when Wockenfuss' son, Herman Lee, returned from World War II, he and his wife, Marian, took over the business. The family credits Herman Lee with creating the signature homemade chocolate candies the candy shop is known for. Their son, Paul, is the current owner and president of Wockenfuss Candies.

The shop also ships its goodies across the United States. They also sell home decor and seasonal gifts.

The family whips up batches of chocolates at their original location on Harford Road in Baltimore City. They also can fulfill custom orders for weddings, corporate functions and other events, Wockenfuss said.

The shop offers such delicacies as chocolate-covered strawberries, almond bark, chocolate-covered pretzels, almond butter crunch, cashew bark, s'mores pretzels, solid breakup chocolate, chocolate covered Oreos, nonpareils, milk chocolate-covered gummi bears, peanut butter cups, malted milk balls, chocolate-covered raisin and peanuts, bridge mix, chocolate-covered espresso beans, dark chocolate amaretto cordials, milk chocolate crab potato chip clusters, chocolate crabs, heavenly rocky road bars, chocolate filled seashells, different flavored caramel apples like oreo and peanut butter explosion, Carmallows, a variety of fudge flavors, dog treats, hard candies, Jelly Belly products, kids treats like milk chocolate cars and Cow Tales, licorice candies, assorted nuts, taffy and taffy pops, sugar-free candy and marzipan.

The Classics: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Peanut Butter Fudge

Sometimes, the classic, single-flavor fudges are favorites for a reason. Our chocolate, vanilla, and peanut butter Wockenfuss fudge have been favorites for many years. Every bite of our mouthwatering fudge delivers a powerful but subtle flavor. Chocolate can give those with big sweet tooths a sugary pick-me-up during the day. Vanilla fudge offers a smooth, classic flavor that tastes good anytime. Peanut butter fudge packs that classic, smooth, yet nutty flavor in just a few bites of soft fudge. You can’t go wrong choosing one of these gift packages for Mother’s Day.

A Little Nutty: Chocolate Almond Fudge

Chocolate and almonds go together perfectly, which is why Wockenfuss has created our own Chocolate Almond Fudge. The sweet chocolate fudge includes chopped almonds that provide a subtle flavor with a crunchy, nutty texture that’s easy to enjoy. If Mom likes her chocolate fudge with a little something extra, this is the ideal choice for Mother’s Day.

A Timeless Duo: Peanut Butter & Chocolate Fudge

Peanut butter cups are a delectable treat, and that’s because the combination of smooth, nutty peanut butter and rich, sweet chocolate always go well together. At Wockenfuss Candies, we believe this combo is one of the very best flavors out there. This is why we’ve crafted our delicious squares of peanut butter and chocolate fudge. These two Wockenfuss fudge flavors are swirled together to create eye-catching fudge and provide a powerful flavor with every bite.

Sweet and Salty: Vanilla Sea Salt Caramel Swirl Fudge

Just as peanut butter and chocolate go so well together, so do sea salt and caramel. These flavors are added to our vanilla fudge to create a Vanilla Sea Salt Caramel Swirl. The creamy vanilla fudge is swirled with sea-salted caramel for the perfect balance of delicious, sweet, and just the slightest hint of salt. The array of flavors that unfold in each bite is simply irresistible.

A Little Bit of Everything: Turtle Fudge

If Mom wants fudge that includes swirls of flavor plus nutty additions, we have the perfect suggestion: Turtle Fudge! Our cream chocolate fudge is swirled with sweet caramel and then mixed with chopped pecans. These nutty and sweet pieces of Wockenfuss fudge pack incredible flavor into every bite.

Wockenfuss Candies is proud to be one of the oldest candy makers in Baltimore. We celebrated our 100th Anniversary in 2015. We are a family owned business that is now in its fifth generation of candy-making.

It all started for us in 1875 when Herman Charles Wockenfuss was born in West Prussia, Germany. He came to America in 1885 and eventually learned how to make candy. In 1915, he proudly began the Wockenfuss Candy Company, known today as Wockenfuss Candies.

Herman Charles continued to operate the business until his son, Herman Lee, and his wife, Marian, took it over in 1945 when Herman Lee returned from World War II. Under Herman Lee’s direction, the business continued to evolve and added three more stores to its flagship location on Belair Road in Northeast Baltimore. Herman Lee was instrumental in creating the signature homemade chocolate candies that are now so closely associated with Wockenfuss Candies’ reputation.

Their son Paul is the current owner and President of Wockenfuss Candies. In 2011, under Paul’s guidance, we moved our production facility to a larger building on Harford Road and closed the original location on Belair Road. The additional space has allowed us to better supply our expanding retail stores, begin a wholesale division, and begin offering an annual tour to the public. Presently, there are 8 retail stores in Maryland, including 2 in Ocean City, MD.

As we have continued to grow, the family has remained very involved in every aspect of the business. Presently, 4 generations of the Wockenfuss family are involved in the business. This includes 10 family members who are eagerly looking forward to the next 100 years.
