    Towson University, a public educational institution located in Towson, Maryland, established in 1866 as the first teacher training school in the state.     Historical Background

    In 1865, the General Assembly of Maryland initiated the establishment of what is now known as Towson University. The institution, originally named “Maryland State Normal School” and located in Baltimore, started with eleven students and three faculty members under the leadership of McFadden Alexander Newell, who also served as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The school quickly outgrew its initial premises and relocated to a new building in West Baltimore in 1876.
