FORMER TIGER MURPHY TO BE INDUCTED INTO MFCA HALL OF FAME

TOWSON, Md. – Former Towson University (1982-85) All-American wide receiver Sean Murphy will be inducted into the Maryland High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame on April 27, recognizing a successful 21-year career at nearby Archbishop Curley.

As the Friars' football coach, Murphy compiled a 127-84 record, winning more games than any other coach in the history of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference. His teams captured five conference championships. In 2014 his Friars posted a 10-0 record to become the school's only undefeated football team to date.

Among his honors, Murphy was named head coach of Team Maryland in the 2015 Big 33 Classic. The 2010 Varsity Sports Network (VSN) Coach of the Year, he served as an assistant in such events as the Baltimore Touchdown Club's All-Star Classic and the Maryland Crab Bowl.

The second former Tiger football player to enter the MFCA's Hall of Fame, Murphy follows running back/punter Jeff Herrick (1975-76) who coached at Broadneck High School. Herrick was inducted in 2016.

Murphy, who was inducted into Towson's Hall of Fame in 1997, helped the Tigers to a 33-12-1 record that included two post-season appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. His banner season was his junior year when he set the program record for most receptions with 61 for 1,128 yards and eight touchdowns, earning him second team Associated Press All-America honors. He was also a two-time All-ECAC selection. He still ranks 4th on Towson's all-time receiving yards list with 2,524 yards. He remains 7th among all receivers with 154 career catches. His 23 career receiving touchdowns rank him 2nd on that list.

In 2017 Murphy resigned his post at Curley when his wife, Lynne, accepted a tenured-track professor position at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. After a year at East Wake High School he assumed his current position as Athletic Director and head football coach at John Paul II High School.
