Donkeys, Goats Escape Blaze That Destroyed Their Pen: Fire Official

A livestock pen caught on fire early last Thursday morning at a Jarrettsville home, forcing donkeys and goats to narrowly escape to safety.

JARRETTSVILLE, MD — Four donkeys and two goats narrowly escaped an early morning fire Thursday that destroyed their pen.

The livestock live on the property at 3109 Sharon Road. The owners woke up around 6:10 a.m. to discover the 40x12-foot pen was nearly engulfed in flames. Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company firefighters arrived on the scene and had the fire under control in 10 minutes.

The pen has been ruled a total loss and investigators are considering an electrical failure as the cause, according to the Maryland State Office of the Fire Marshal. Damage has been estimated at $50,000.
