Student-Athlete Dies After Medical Emergency At Baltimore County School

A student-athlete died after a medical emergency at a Franklin High, officials said. He was 16 years old.

REISTERSTOWN, MD — A student-athlete died this week after a medical emergency at Franklin High School in Reisterstown, police told the media Friday.

Officers said he was 16 years old.

The Baltimore County Fire Department said it was called to the school Wednesday at 9:18 a.m.

The call was for "a child experiencing a medical emergency on the football field," fire officials said.

Crews said they arrived to find the victim "in critical condition, with resuscitative efforts already in progress."

Medics said they continued resuscitative efforts and took the student-athlete to a hospital in critical condition.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital, the Baltimore County Police Department said.

Franklin High Principal Kieran O'Connell felt "profound sadness" after the death. O'Connell offered counseling resources to anybody needing support.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the student's family and loved ones," O'Connell said in a message posted on the Franklin High Athletic Boosters' Facebook page. "We will share more information as soon as we are permitted to do so."

Franklin High canceled all practices on Wednesday afternoon. Athletic activities resumed Thursday.

Baltimore County Public Schools has not released any further details or comments.
