Four Tigers with Double-Digit Kills Lift Towson Over Delaware in Five Sets

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University volleyball team faced the Delaware Blue Hens in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Delaware. The Tigers held off the Blue Hen resurgence late in the match to win in five sets.

Victoria Barrett led the way with 23 kills as four Tigers finished in double-digits: Barrett, Zyare Abdul-Rahim (13), Sarah Callender (13) and Erin Brothers (10).

How it Happened

Delaware opened the first set on a 5-2 run to take a modest lead early in the match.
Towson responded with six of the next eight points to take an 8-7 lead in the set. Four Tigers picked up a kill in the run: Victoria Barrett, Zyare Abdul-Rahim, Sarah Callender and Erin Brothers.
After a Delaware point tied it, the teams exchanged short rallies to take it to 11-11.
The Black & Gold answered with a 6-1 run to take a 17-12 lead in the set. MacKenzie Whyte had two service aces, along with three Barrett kills and one Abdul-Rahim kill.
Towson closed the set on a 3-1 run with a kill from Ava Nakai and a Kaitlyn Moran service ace.
Delaware opened set two with another 5-2 start.
The Blue Hens followed with a six-point run to make it 11-3 in the set.
Towson pulled it to 12-6 with three of the next four points.
After two Blue Hen points, the Tigers won four out of the next five to make it 15-10.
Delaware scored five of the next seven points to extend their lead to 20-12.
TU won four of the next five to pull within six.
Delaware closed the set with wins on four of the last six points at 25-18.

Inside the Numbers

Barrett matched her season-high with 23 kills during the afternoon.
Middle blockers Brothers and Ylenia De Mango each finished errorless with seven-plus kills. Brothers finished with 10 on a .526 hitting percentage while De Mango had seven at a .700 clip.
MacKenzie Whyte led all players with three service aces, a new career high.
