- Expect Daytime Single-Lane Closures Beginning Next Week; Delays Likely
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will intermittently close a left lane in each direction of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between I-70 and the Stevenson Road overpass during daytime off-peak daytime hours beginning Monday, October 14. Crews will also work on I-695 between I-83 (Jones Falls Expressway) and I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway).
The work is part of the Maryland State Highway Administration’s project to improve reliability and reduce congestion along I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard). The off-peak lane closures will continue through spring 2025, weather permitting.
Congestion relief project, Baltimore Beltway
Starting October 14, motorists should expect heavy traffic during off-peak daytime hours on the west and north sides of I-695 and plan extra commuting time. The median work includes adding highway drainage systems, power and communications conduit and installing overhead lane marker gantries.
The State Highway Administration will deploy variable speed limit signs and automated speed enforcement. Motorists should pay close attention to the variable speed limit signs as speeds may be reduced when crews are in the work zone, not necessarily when there are active lane closures.
The State Highway Administration appreciates motorists’ patience as we complete this necessary construction work. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways.
