Theatre Review: ‘Working for Crumbs’ at Spotlighters Theatre
By: Abigail Dobry, mdtheatreguide.com
Directed by Alanna Kiewe at Spotlighters Theatre, “Working For Crumbs” tells an all-too familiar tale of the ebb and flow of working life in dreaded corporate America. In this play, we meet Grace and Amy as they tirelessly attempt to meet the standards of their vulture-like boss, Helen. The pair suffers through the typical happenings and characters of a working office, including the colleague with horrid perfume and the attractive man who delivers the water cooler refills, all the while loathing their boss who frequently asks, “Girls, what do you do all day?” Playwright Kate Danley is not only a best-selling author with 30 years of experience in theater and film, she is a Towson University theater graduate and a Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Arts. Danley leaves no crumbs in this jam-packed, lively, and riotous comedy.
Kiewe takes Danley’s work to comical heights, making it perfect for a night of hearty laughs.
The creative minds backstage wove together a cohesive and clever reflection of office life. Every corner of the theater-in-the-round was used purposefully. In particular, the gem was the shadow silhouette of the boss’s private office. Scenic Designer Justin Nepomuceno and Lighting Designer Jaeden Arrington constructed this ingenious space, perfect for those slapstick moments of peril.
Costume Designer Zoe Nowoslawski reflects each character’s persona in their business attire. Clever details include goofy, rubber chicken earrings worn by Oliva Libowitz as Molly (the annoying perfume girl) to Andromeda Bacchus’ intimidatingly stylish red glasses and matching lips as Viviane, another supervisor at the company.
Kathryn Russo and Dominique Solomon portray the work besties, Grace and Amy, with complimentary energy. Russo, riled up with an anxious edge to perform her best work, impresses with her physical comedy, committing wholeheartedly to the scenes. This is balanced by Solomon who calms her partner-in-crime, all the while burying her own worrisome and unpredictable behaviors. The duo is consistently entertaining.
Spotlighters Theatre’s production of “Working For Crumbs” is outrageously fun. Kiewe takes Danley’s work to comical heights, making it perfect for a night of hearty laughs. This show just might leave you rethinking those moments in your own cubicle when you secretly wish that your boss would just drop dead—or at least it will make you second guess snacking on the extra oatmeal raisin cookies in the break room.
Running Time: Two hours and 15 minutes with a 15-minute intermission.
“Working For Crumbs” runs through February 2, 2025 at Spotlighters Theatre, 817 St. Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21202. For more information and to purchase tickets, please go online.
