Maurice Matteson might not be a household name here in Avery County, but he played an important role in preserving local history.
Born in Galva, Illinois, in 1893, Matteson was a graduate of Columbia University and the Sherwood School in Chicago. He was a concert singer, voice teacher and performer with both the Minneapolis and Russian Symphony Orchestras. During World War I, Matteson served with Ambulance Company No. 277 at Camp Jackson.
