After More Than 100 Years, This Bakery Is Closing

Herman's Bakery and Catering is closing up after spending more than 100 years serving the Baltimore region.

Having served the Baltimore region for more than a century, Herman's Bakery and Catering is closing its doors. The beloved bakery announced in a Facebook post that it'll be closing its doors for the last time on March 31.

"Our family wishes to thank our loyal customers for their support over the last 103 years. This comes with a lot of thought and a very heavy heart," reads the post.

"It has been an honor to serve you and the community for over 103 years with our 6 generations of family proudly operating in the Baltimore Region."

The bakery opened its first location in Highlandtown back in 1923, expanding the business throughout the years to seven sites. The Dundalk location was the second base the Herman family opened in 1958. It's now the family's last storefront.

Harry Herman Jr., who owns the bakery, told WBAL that the decision to close came as "a number of the family members have been stricken with illnesses."

"Some of them are getting a little older as time goes on, so we, as a family business, made a decision that it was probably best for us to close so as to not have our reputation maybe tarnished over time," he said.

The news came as a shock to the community. Some told the station that they traveled far to pay their respects and say goodbye to the shop.

Online, some responded by questioning whether a cookbook was forthcoming , so the recipes wouldn't be lost to time.

"And yall better pop out on April 1st with an April fools," read another post.

Until the end of the month, locals can continue to pop into the shop at 7560 Holabird Avenue.

Doors stay open Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. On Sunday, customers can visit between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
