Baltimore County Council honors NASA astronaut and Cockeysville native G. Reid Wiseman

TOWSON, MD—The Baltimore County Council honored NASA Astronaut G. Reid Wiseman during its legislative session on Monday, June 1, to celebrate his historic achievements as commander of the recent Artemis II lunar mission.

The special celebration is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the County Council Chamber. Wiseman, a Baltimore County native, and Dulaney High graduate will join the meeting virtually to accept a special resolution and proclamation, while his father, Bill Wiseman, will attend the ceremony in person.

Wiseman recently commanded the 10-day Artemis II mission, which concluded in April. The flight completed a fly-by around the moon and set a new record for the furthest human distance traveled from Earth.

Council Chair Mike Ertel called the Artemis II mission an inspiration for everyone around the world, noting that Wiseman has maintained deep roots in Baltimore County throughout his career with NASA. Ertel praised Wiseman for staying in touch with faculty and students at his former high school and acting as an ambassador for the county.

Councilman David Marks added that Wiseman is an American hero who sets an extraordinary example for future generations. Marks emphasized that the county is celebrating both Wiseman’s historic role in the lunar flight and the accomplishments of the entire crew.

Wiseman was raised in Cockeysville and graduated from Dulaney High School in 1993. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before starting his military career in 1999. He served as a naval aviator through five deployments and became a test pilot in 2004 while stationed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River.

NASA selected Lieutenant Commander Wiseman for its astronaut program in 2009. He previously served as a flight engineer on Expedition 40/41 to the International Space Station in 2014, and later took on the role of chief of the Astronaut Office from 2020 to 2022.
