In 1927 came the first Butterscotch Krimpet and soon thereafter a line of individually wrapped fruit and cream pies, all of which were bundled in wax-paper, a tradition that lasted into the 1960s.

What is National Krimpet Day? National Krimpet Day celebrates Tastykake’s iconic treat, the Krimpet. This day is in celebration of the beginning of this delicious fluffy sponge cake baked into a unique Krimpet shape. The magic began in 1927 when Philip J. Baur and Herbert T. Morris created a Tasty Innovation, now known as the Krimpet. The delicious Krimpet is a finger-shaped cake with a thick layer of icing, which no one had seen or tasted anything like before! National Krimpet Day is celebrated to mark the beginning of this iconic Philadelphia treat. Why was National Krimpet Day created? Founded in 1914, Tastykake has been a true Philadelphia phenomenon for over 100 years! In the never-ending mission to produce fun, delicious treats, the Tastykake bakers made a finger-shaped cake with a thick layer of icing. Unfortunately, it was so moist that it fell apart, until someone recommended to “crimp it” to give it a more stable shape. It worked and in 1927 came the first Butterscotch Krimpet. National Krimpet Day was created to celebrate the making of the Tastykake iconic product, the Krimpet. On July 7th, Tastykake began baking these uniquely shaped and delicious cake treats and the rest is history.
