HONORING THE LEGACY OF DR. ROBERT Y. DUBEL

On November 29, 2023, at the age of 98, Dr. Robert Y. Dubel, BCPS superintendent from 1976-1992 passed away leaving a legacy to remember and celebrate.

During his tenure, he made significant contributions to education including building positive relationships, overseeing growth management, championing curriculum enhancements, establishing active community engagement, and implementing innovative programs to meet diverse student needs.

Dr. Dubel, or “Old Bob” as he liked to be called, was one of the foundation’s founding fathers, and as the foundation grew, he became one of its biggest cheerleaders. He was named the Distinguished Honorary Chair of Tee Off for TEAM BCPS Golf Classic, and he visited every twosome/foursome who played, shaking their hands, and capturing the moment with a photo op. He was also honored by former Superintendent Dr. Verletta White at a State of the Schools event for his dedication and service.

Beyond his role as BCPS superintendent, Dr. Dubel’s legacy as a scholar and humanitarian will be remembered by many in the community through his mentorship, ethical leadership, desegregation efforts, community engagement, and embrace of change.

The Dr. Robert Y. Dubel Memorial Award will be awarded annually by the foundation to a scholar, humanitarian, and dedicated educator who is making a positive impact in public education in Baltimore County.

During this, the inaugural year, it was the foundation’s distinct pleasure and an honor to present the Dr. Robert Y. Dubel Memorial Award to BCPS Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers. Homer McCall, BCPS chief human resource officer, accepted the award on her behalf and extended her appreciation.
