Generational Anthem

Tom Petty wrote “American Girl” during the mid-1970s, while living in a rented apartment in Encino, California. He was a newcomer to the West Coast, having left his hometown of Gainesville, Florida, one year earlier to chase down a record deal in Los Angeles. It was the American highway system that brought him all the way to California, and the same stretch of blacktop now snaked its way past his new home, filling his bedroom with the noise of countless motorists running down their own dreams.

“I was living in an apartment where I was right by the freeway, and the cars would go by,” he told author Paul Zollo for the book Conversations with Tom Petty. “In Encino, near Leon Russell’s house. And I remember thinking that [the traffic] sounded like the ocean to me. That was my ocean, my Malibu where I heard the waves crash, but it was just the cars going by. I think that must have inspired the lyric.”

"Breakdown" became the group's first Top 40 hit. It peaked at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and served as their debut single.

"American Girl" didn't chart initially. But it's become one of rock's most recognized anthems, surging back onto streaming platforms each Independence Day. A new mix was featured in a Major League Baseball tribute to the U.S. Semiquincentennial earlier this month.

Petty wrote "Breakdown" during a late-night session, then summoned the Heartbreakers back to the studio at dawn to cut it. The original take stretched past seven minutes before editors trimmed it for the single release. Guitarist Mike Campbell's riffs define the track.

The debut album turns 50 this year. Half a century later, it remains among rock's most impressive first efforts.

Petty released 13 studio albums with the Heartbreakers and three solo records: Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, and Highway Companion. He also joined the supergroup Traveling Wilburys and the pre-Heartbreakers outfit Mudcrutch.

Awards piled up: Songwriters Hall of Fame induction, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame enshrinement, and several GRAMMY Awards. His sales topped 85 million records, according to The Music Universe. Streams exceeded five billion. He performed for more than 140 million fans across the globe.

"American Girl" was the final tune Petty performed live, during his September 2017 concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. He passed away just over a week later on Oct. 2, 2017, days after wrapping his 40th Anniversary Tour.
