First Look At Towson High School's Future: Initial Design Presentation Scheduled For September 14

Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) will present the initial design of the much-anticipated Towson High School capital improvement project at a community meeting on September 14.

The meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. September 14 at Towson High School's Auditorium, aims to engage parents and residents, offering a chance to ask questions and provide feedback post-presentation.

According to a presentation on the project in November 2022, Towson High School will undergo a complete transformation with upgraded finishes, furnishings, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, alongside state-of-the-art classroom technology and new roofing.

The project's primary goals include increasing student capacity to 1,860 students, up from the current state-rated capacity of 1,260 students, and maintaining the building's historic character.

Built in 1947, the school is listed as a Baltimore County Landmark and on the MIHP (Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties) list. To adhere to the Maryland Historical Trust Act of 1985, the project will follow the procedures outlined in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Towson High has maintained some of its original historic features, including the main and auditorium lobbies. However, most other spaces have been significantly updated since 1953. Existing historic materials include distinct architectural columns, terrazzo flooring, terra cotta wall tiles, and various plaques.

In June of 2023, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski announced $80 million in funding for Baltimore County School construction and renovation, with $20 million earmarked for the Towson High School capital improvement project.

"Baltimore County children and educators deserve world-class school facilities that are modern and safe. This financial backing is a testament to our dedication to raise the bar for school construction investments across all our communities," Olszewski said.

The Board of Education is scheduled to approve a construction contract in February 2025, with a final stakeholder meeting scheduled for March 2025.
