Opera Baltimore to Showcase ‘Little Red’s Most Unusual Day’
Opera Baltimore will present “Little Red’s Most Unusual Day” on Jan. 25 and March 1, 2025.
The family-friendly production will be presented in partnership with Towson University’s Department of Music. The work features scenes by Offenbach and Rossini with a unique spin. The production is aimed at children in Pre-K through 5th grade.
“As a former children’s choir director, I’ve seen firsthand how powerfully music can resonate with young hearts and minds,” said Julia Cooke, President and General Director of Opera Baltimore, per an official press release. “Whether it’s the children’s chorus in La bohème this season, our fun-filled family show Little Red’s Most Unusual Day, or our hands-on educational programs like What is Opera? A Team!, we’re rolling out the red carpet for even our tiniest listeners—making them feel at home with opera. By creating experiences for all age groups, we’re inspiring a lifelong love of this art form and ensuring opera remains a welcoming, family-friendly part of Baltimore’s cultural scene.”
Both performances start at 10:30 a.m.
The work was previously presented at Opera in the Ozarks and Des Moines Metro Opera, among others. Annapolis Opera will present the work on Feb. 8, 2025.
Little Red's
Most Unusual Day
Sat, Jan 25 at 10:30 AM & Sat, Mar 1 at 10:30 AM
An operatic version of the story of Little Red Riding Hood based on scenes from operas by J. Offenbach and G. Rossini.
Forest Ranger Dudley is too shy to ask Little Red’s mom, the widow Hood, to the Forest Ranger Ball. For that reason he leaves a written invitation in a basket of flowers outside Little Red’s house. Unfortunately for Dudley, the basket is delivered to Granny. Granny simply loves men, especially men in uniform. In the resulting confusion Dudley loses his pants, Granny kisses the Wolf, Mom gets impatient and Little Red gets in trouble. In fact, everyone experiences, in one way or another, a very, very unusual day.
The show is performed by our partners at the Towson University Department of Music and is best suited for kids Pre-K-5th grade. Children's tickets are $15, and caregivers are $5.
At Opera Baltimore, we believe opera is for everyone, even the tiniest mischief-makers and their (sometimes) over-caffeinated caregivers. Our children and family programming injects a shot of pure joy and family-focused programming into Baltimore’s cultural scene. It’s where the drama of opera meets the wonder of children where they are, creating a wonderful shared experience. Whether we’re on in the beautiful Engineers Club or out in many cafetoriums around the area, these programs bring the glitz, glamour, and glorious creativity of opera to every corner of our community. After all, building community through opera means breaking down barriers and showing everyone—whatever their age—that opera belongs to them too.
